Biosphere Park Gurgler Kamm
The name “Biosphere Park/Reserve” is above all used for areas with outstanding relevance for nature research and protection, but it is also awarded for model regions which show how man and nature can live together. The “Gurgler Kamm,” which was awarded this extraordinary designation, was one of only a few places in the Alps and received it due in a large part to the “University’s Center for Alpine Research Obergurgl.” The center participated in the “International Biological Program” as well as the “Man and Biosphere” (MaB6) project during the 60’s and 70’s and hence the international research community was sensitized to the unique alpine environment surrounding Obergurgl early on. With an area of 1,500 ha, the reserve, which was declared in 1977, covers elevations reaching from 1900 to 3400 m above sea level and covers the most important valleys and summits of the Alps from the Königs valley in the North to the Rotmoos valley in the South. A paradise for those who want to explore the outdoors as well as the inner self.
