Sheep Drive to Summer Quarters

The cross-border sheep drive over the Ötztal main ridge of the Alps is one of the outstanding features of our region. The hike takes us from Vent (1,900m) through the historically interesting Rofental up to the Hochjoch-Hospiz (2,413m). Along the way, hiking guide Alfons talks about the old grazing rights and the centuries-old tradition of driving sheep.

At the bridge below the Hochjoch hospice we welcome the sheep that have come the long way from Schnalstal over the 2,861 meter high Hochjoch and are now enjoying their well-deserved summer break on the lush high pastures in the Rofental.

After a break together, we hike back to Vent.
