Habitat trees for our forests

Background

Forests are home to a significant proportion of the region’s biodiversity. A crucial factor for many species is the presence of ‘deadwood’. It serves as a habitat for woodpeckers and tree-dwelling bats, and as a food source for numerous beetles, fungi and other organisms. In addition to natural forest reserves  and patches of natural forests, it is important to leave deadwood and other structures, such as root plates, in managed forests as well.

The initiative

Therefore, the Tyrolean Nature Parks have launched the ‘Habitat tree’ initiative. The aim is to work together with the forestry sector, landowners and those with rights of use to preserve deadwood trees in the nature park forests. Landowners will receive a one-off payment of €70 for each deadwood tree with a minimum diameter of 45cm (at chest height) and a height of approximately 8 metres. In return, the landowners or those with rights of use undertake to leave the tree standing for at least 20 years, as agreed with the relevant nature park.

We are still looking for tree sponsors!

The ‘Habitat tree’ initiative is to be funded by private sponsors – companies and individuals. Sponsors will receive a certificate and, depending on the amount sponsored, either a key ring or a wooden woodpecker.

You can get involved with a one-off contribution of 120 euros or 600 euros! Would you like to sponsor several ‘Habitat trees’ at once? That’s possible too, of course! Landowners will receive €70 for the deadwood tree, whilst the Ötztal Nature Park will retain €50 to cover administrative costs.

Here’s how it works:

  • Get in touch with the Ötztal Nature Park
  • Let us know how many trees you’d like to sponsor
  • We’ll send you a proposal (including the location on a map)
  • If you agree to the proposal, we’ll send you the invoice
  • We’ll also send you a certificate stating the number and location of your trees
  • We’ll keep you updated on the project’s progress and related events via our newsletter
