Biodiversity Festival

20 YEARS OF THE ÖTZTAL NATURE PARK

Saturday, 11 July 2026, 1 pm – 5.30 pm
Längenfeld, Nature Park Centre

FREE ENTRY!

Early in the morning, experts set off to identify as many species as possible in the Ötztal valley within 24 hours. This data is extremely valuable for the Nature Park!

You can find out why biodiversity and knowledge about it are so important during the afternoon’s ‘Festival of Biodiversity’ programme. Our doors open at 1 pm for young and old alike. There are a variety of interactive stations to try out and get involved with at the Nature Park House. A mushroom expert will bring along his finds and share interesting facts about them. The excursion in Obergurgl focuses on “Biodiversity in Fast Motion” (registration required). Local producers whose products contribute to biodiversity or make use of its diversity will be selling their goods. At our children’s quiz at the “Taste Stalls”, children’s Nature Park T-shirts and “Kuhle Schokolade” from Tiroler Edlen will be raffled off. Come and join in!

Refreshments will be provided by the Längenfeld farmers’ wives with cake and coffee – you are welcome to fill up your own water bottles.

Further details about the programme

Green School + Pop-up University:

The Botanical Garden is a unique place where you can experience the diversity of plant life – from our local area as well as from exotic habitats. Here, you can explore how plants have adapted to their environment and actively shape it – all without any jet lag. This time, the Botanical Garden is on the road with the Pop-Up Uni and has some exciting scientific activities for you to try out! Immerse yourself in the world of plants!

Butterfly:

Butterflies, and day-flying butterflies in particular, are ideal for observing changes in the natural and cultural landscape. The Viel-Falter Monitoring project combines butterfly sightings recorded by volunteers (citizen science) with professional scientific surveys. This allows us to harness the synergistic benefits of both approaches to collect high-quality, scientifically sound data. Become a researcher yourself at the Festival of Biodiversity!

I-naturalist:

iNaturalist is a social network and citizen science project. Animals, plants and fungi are documented or uploaded to the app, along with the location where the organism was observed. The organisms are identified by the community. On the day, we’ll show you how it all works in practice and give it a go straight away.

Elements in the natural garden: – 1.30 pm and 3.00 pm

The area surrounding the Nature Park Centre has been expanded to create a valuable habitat for amphibians and insects, with dry stone walls built and nesting sites for wild bees created. A so-called Benjes hedge made from reclaimed wood has also brought life to ‘our garden’. During the guided tour around the Nature Park House, these natural garden features are highlighted, providing habitats for grass frogs, dragonflies, wild bees and others – the diversity can be enjoyed to the full and actively observed.

Guided tour of the exhibition at the Nature Park Centre – 2 pm and 3.30 pm

Our permanent exhibition showcases the natural diversity of the Ötztal in all its facets. It explains the region’s unique flora, fauna and habitats, as well as its geology, including the landslides that shaped the valley. During the guided tour of the exhibition, selected exhibits are explored in greater detail.

Finds by the expert

When experts attempt to identify as many species as possible within 24 hours as part of Biodiversity Day, this provides extremely valuable data for the Ötztal Nature Park. Our mushroom expert will also bring his finds back to the Nature Park Centre to share his discoveries with you.

Children's programme

The pro vita alpina children’s programme is renowned for its creativity and enthusiasm. Come and see what’s in store this time…

Excursion to Obergurgl – BOOKING REQUIRED!

Biodiversity in fast motion – a hike through the Rotmoosferner glacier foreland. The ongoing glacial melt in the Alps is a well-documented phenomenon with far-reaching implications for future societies. For biologists, however, it also presents an opportunity to shed light on the fundamental mechanisms of ecosystems on our planet: How are barren areas colonised? Which organisms are the first to venture into the unknown? How does a food web develop? We will explore these and other questions in the glacier forefield of the Rotmoosferner. At lunchtime, there is the option of stopping for a bite to eat at the Schönwieshütte.
